IELTS or TOEFL: which is easier, and which counts in Turkey?
Facts last checked against official sources on October 10, 2026.
Short answer
For academic posts, associate professorship and anything tied to ÖSYM’s table in Turkey, choose TOEFL iBT: it is on ÖSYM’s equivalence list and IELTS is not. Universities abroad widely accept both; a UK visa needs IELTS for UKVI. Both test four skills and stay valid for two years; TOEFL is fully computer-based and under two hours, while IELTS Speaking is with an examiner.

| IELTS | TOEFL iBT | |
|---|---|---|
| Score scale | 0–9 bands | 1–6 bands (with a 0–120 equivalent) |
| Length | About 2 hours 45 minutes | Under two hours |
| Speaking | Face to face or by video with an examiner | Recorded on the computer (simulated interview) |
| Paper option | Yes | No; the Home Edition is taken at home |
| Results | Computer 1–5 days, paper 13 days | About 3 days |
| Fee (Turkey, 2026) | TRY 12,000–12,210 | US$185 plus taxes |
| ÖSYM equivalence | No | Yes |
| UK visa (SELT) | Yes, with IELTS for UKVI | No |
| Validity | 2 years | 2 years |
Which is easier?
“Easier” depends on you: if taking notes on screen and typing fast suits you, TOEFL may feel easier; if you prefer talking to a person or a paper test, IELTS may. Listening and reading texts are academic in both; check your target institution’s list before choosing.
Quick decision guide
- Academic posts, associate professorship and graduate study in Turkey: TOEFL iBT (or YDS/YÖKDİL).
