Is IELTS accepted in Turkey? Prep-year exemption and YDS equivalence

Facts last checked against official sources on October 7, 2026.

Short answer

IELTS is not on ÖSYM’s current foreign-language equivalence list, so it cannot stand in for YDS and is not accepted by universities that follow the ÖSYM table, such as METU. Some universities accept it for prep-year exemption under their own rules (e.g. Boğaziçi: Academic 6.5 with Writing 6.5).

What should I do?

Check the list on your university’s prep-exemption or graduate language-requirement page. If IELTS is not listed, you may need TOEFL iBT, YDS or YÖKDİL instead.

For study abroad

For universities and migration abroad IELTS is one of the most widely accepted tests; the Turkish equivalence rule does not affect that.
