Facts last checked against official sources on October 7, 2026.
Short answer
YDS has 80 multiple-choice questions and lasts 180 minutes. It tests vocabulary, grammar, translation and reading; there is no listening, speaking or writing. The paper YDS starts at 10:15 and e-YDS at 13:45.
Typical question types
The mix can vary between sessions; the table shows the structure of recent English papers.
| Part | What it tests |
|---|---|
| Vocabulary and phrases | The right word, idiom or phrasal verb for the gap |
| Grammar | Tenses, conjunctions, prepositions, sentence structure |
| Cloze test | Filling gaps in a paragraph from context |
| Sentence completion | Completing half a sentence correctly in meaning and form |
| Translation | Closest meaning, English–Turkish and Turkish–English |
| Reading | Passage questions: main idea, inference, detail |
| Dialogue, closest meaning, paragraph completion, the irrelevant sentence | Flow and context of a text |
Is there enough time?
That is about 2 minutes 15 seconds per question. Moving quickly through vocabulary and grammar leaves time for the reading passages. Dictionaries are not allowed.
