How are YDS questions distributed? How many questions per section?
Facts last checked against official sources on October 7, 2026.
Short answer
In recent English YDS papers the 80 questions were: vocabulary 6, grammar 10, cloze test 10, sentence completion 10, translation 6, reading (passages) 20, dialogue 5, closest meaning 4, paragraph completion 4, the irrelevant sentence 5. ÖSYM does not fix this officially; small changes are possible.
Distribution by question number
About a quarter of the points come from reading; vocabulary and grammar also decide the cloze and sentence-completion items.
| Section | Questions | Numbers |
|---|---|---|
| Vocabulary and phrasal verbs | 6 | 1–6 |
| Grammar (tenses, prepositions, conjunctions) | 10 | 7–16 |
| Cloze test (2 passages) | 10 | 17–26 |
| Sentence completion | 10 | 27–36 |
| Translation (English–Turkish and Turkish–English) | 6 | 37–42 |
| Reading (passage questions) | 20 | 43–62 |
| Dialogue completion | 5 | 63–67 |
| Closest meaning | 4 | 68–71 |
| Paragraph completion | 4 | 72–75 |
| The irrelevant sentence | 5 | 76–80 |
What is it good for?
It helps you plan your time. For 80 questions in 180 minutes, moving quickly through vocabulary and grammar and keeping at least 80–90 minutes for reading and paragraph items is a good start.
The distribution is not an ÖSYM rule but the structure of recent papers. You can look at past booklets on ÖSYM’s website.
