What is TOEFL ITP? How does it differ from TOEFL iBT and where is it accepted?

Facts last checked against official sources on October 12, 2026.

Short answer

TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program) is ETS’s paper-based English test that institutions administer internally: listening, structure (grammar) and reading, with no speaking or writing; Level 1 scores run from 310 to 677. Some Turkish universities use it for preparatory-class exemption or placement; it is not in ÖSYM’s equivalence table and does not replace TOEFL iBT for applications abroad.

What is it used for in Türkiye?

Some universities use ITP for preparatory-class exemption, placement or as a prerequisite for graduate programmes; the minimum score varies and usually counts only at that institution. For another university, any procedure that requires a central exam under YÖK rules, or applications abroad you need iBT, IELTS or YDS/e-YDS.

Which test should I prepare for?

If your only goal is exemption at your own university and it accepts ITP, ITP is enough and cheaper. For study abroad, academic posts or doctoral applications aim for iBT (or another test ÖSYM accepts); ITP listening and reading practice fits naturally into iBT preparation.
