What is TOEFL iBT and what is it for?

Facts last checked against official sources on October 7, 2026.

Short answer

TOEFL iBT is ETS’s computer-based international academic English test. It tests reading, listening, writing and speaking; since 21 January 2026 it has a shorter, adaptive format scored on a 1–6 band scale. It is used for university admission worldwide, above all in the US, and in Turkey for prep-year exemption.

Where do you take it?

You take it on computer at a test centre or at home with an online proctor (TOEFL iBT Home Edition); both have the same content. A separate version that keeps the old format, TOEFL iBT Australia, exists for Australian visas.
