New TOEFL scoring: what does a 1–6 band mean on the 0–120 scale?
Facts last checked against official sources on October 7, 2026.
Short answer
In the 2026 format each section and the overall score are reported from 1 to 6 in half bands; the overall score is the average of the four sections. During a two-year transition reports also show a 0–120 equivalent. According to ETS, 6 = 114, 5 = 95 and above, 4 = 72 and above.
Bands and their 0–120 equivalent
ETS also maps the bands to CEFR: 6 = C2, 5–5.5 = C1, 4–4.5 = B2, 3–3.5 = B1.
| Band (1–6) | 0–120 equivalent |
|---|---|
| 6 | 114 |
| 5.5 | 107 and above |
| 5 | 95 and above |
| 4.5 | 86 and above |
| 4 | 72 and above |
| 3.5 | 58 and above |
| 3 | 44 and above |
