Where does a YDS score count, and what is it for?
Facts last checked against official sources on October 7, 2026.
Short answer
A YDS score is used for associate professorship (at least 55), PhD admission (at least 55), research and teaching assistant posts (at least 50, 85 for language posts), the public-sector language allowance (level C, 70 and above) and the TUS/DUS/EUS language requirement (50). Universities set the minimum for master’s programmes.
Minimum scores in the regulations
| Purpose | Minimum score | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Associate professorship (doçentlik) | 55 | Higher Education Law 2547, art. 24 |
| PhD and proficiency-in-art admission | 55 (universities may ask for more) | Graduate Education Regulation |
| Master’s admission | No national minimum; each university senate decides | Graduate Education Regulation |
| Research and teaching assistant posts | 50; 85 for posts teaching in a foreign language or in language fields | Regulation on the central exam for academic staff |
| Public-sector language allowance | Level C (70) or above | Decree 375, art. 2 |
| Language requirement in TUS, DUS, EUS placements | 50 | ÖSYM 2026 YDS guide |
Where else is it asked for?
Public-sector A-group job postings, YÖK’s recognition of foreign degrees and, from 2026, the National Education Academy’s foreign-language teaching fields also ask for YDS. Universities abroad usually ask for IELTS or TOEFL.
