How should I study for the new TOEFL?
Facts last checked against official sources on October 7, 2026.
Short answer
In the adaptive sections the first stage decides a lot: aim for accuracy rather than speed in the first part of Reading and Listening. Practise word formation and word order for Complete the Words and Build a Sentence, and get used to writing a clear position with two supporting points quickly.
Practical tips
- Complete the Words and Build a Sentence are short tasks worth many points; do a few sets every day.
- In the email and academic discussion tasks, write a clear position with two concrete supporting points.
- In Speaking, practise repeating sentences in full for Listen and Repeat and giving fluent, organised answers quickly for Take an Interview.

Frequently asked
What is a good TOEFL iBT score?
On the old 0–120 scale, 80 was enough for most undergraduate programmes and 90–100 for selective universities and graduate schools; on the 2026 1–6 band scale that range corresponds to roughly 4–4.5. Always check the threshold of the institution you apply to.
How many months does TOEFL preparation take?
From B2 to the target score, 2–4 months of regular study is typical; from B1, 5–8 months. Because the test is fully computer-based and timed, part of the preparation must happen on screen with a timer; recording and reviewing your speaking answers gives the fastest progress.
Is TOEFL or IELTS easier?
The content difficulty is similar; the difference is the format. TOEFL is entirely on a computer with speaking recorded into a microphone; in IELTS, speaking is with a live examiner and writing can be on paper or computer. Fast typists who get nervous in interviews find TOEFL easier; people who prefer face-to-face speaking find IELTS easier.
