Günlük İngilizcede en çok duyacağın altı phrasal verb'ü, anlamlarını, sık kullanıldıkları kelimelerle (collocation) ve cümle içindeki yerleriyle öğren.

Phrasal verb nedir?

Phrasal verb, bir fiil + küçük bir kelime (particle) birleşimidir. Küçük kelime genelde up, down, out, off, after gibi bir edat ya da zarftır. Önemli nokta şu: Anlam çoğu zaman tek tek kelimelerden çıkmaz. give "vermek", up "yukarı" demektir ama give up "vazgeçmek" anlamına gelir. Bu yüzden phrasal verb'leri bütün olarak öğrenmen gerekir.

Bu derste öğreneceğin altı phrasal verb

1. give up = vazgeçmek, denemeyi bırakmak

  • Sık kullanıldığı yapılar: give up trying, give up a hobby, give up the idea
  • Don't give up. You are getting better every day.

  • Dikkat: give up + -ing kullanılır, to + fiil kullanılmaz.

    DoğruShe gave up playing the piano.

2. look after = bakmak, ilgilenmek (care for)

  • Sık kullanıldığı yapılar: look after children / a pet / a garden / yourself
  • Can you look after my cat this weekend?
  • look after ile look at (bakmak, göz atmak) ve look for (aramak) karıştırılmamalı.

3. turn down = (a) reddetmek, (b) sesi/ısıyı kısmak

  • Reddetmek: turn down an offer / an invitation / a job
  • Kısmak: turn down the volume / the heating / the music
  • She turned down the invitation because she was busy.
  • Please turn the TV down. It's too loud.
  • Zıt anlamlısı ses için turn up (sesi açmak).

4. find out = öğrenmek, bilgi edinmek

  • Sık kullanıldığı yapılar: find out the answer / the truth / what time / where / if
  • I'll find out what time the bus leaves.
  • Dikkat: find out bir bilgiyi araştırarak ya da sorarak öğrenmek demektir. Ders çalışarak öğrenmek için learn kullanırız.

5. run out of = (bir şeyi) bitirmek, tükenmek

  • Sık kullanıldığı yapılar: run out of time / money / milk / petrol / patience
  • We ran out of sugar, so I went to the shop.

  • Dikkat: Arkasından mutlaka of gelir.

    YanlışWe ran out sugar.

6. put off = ertelemek

  • Sık kullanıldığı yapılar: put off a meeting / a decision / a trip, put off doing something
  • They put off the trip because of the weather.
  • I always put off cleaning my room.
  • put off-ing kullanılır

Nesne nerede durur?

Bazı phrasal verb'ler ayrılabilir (separable): nesne, fiil ile particle'ın arasına girebilir. turn down ve put off böyledir.

  • DoğruShe turned down the offer.

  • DoğruShe turned the offer down.

Nesne bir zamir (it, them, him...) ise mutlaka araya girer:

  • DoğruShe turned it down.

  • YanlışShe turned down it.

  • look after ise ayrılmaz

    YanlışI look them after.

    DoğruI look after them.

Kısa çalışma ipuçları

  • Phrasal verb'leri tek başına değil, küçük cümleler içinde öğren.
  • Her fiil için iki üç collocation yaz: run out of time, run out of money.
  • Particle'ı unutma. look ile look after tamamen farklı anlamlar taşır.
