Neden önemli?

İngilizce konuşanlar günlük hayatta, iş yazışmalarında ve sınavlarda sürekli phrasal verb (fiil + edat/zarf) ve deyim kullanır. Bunları kelime kelime çevirirsen anlam çoğu zaman bozulur. Bu yüzden onları hazır parçalar halinde, yani kelime eşleşmeleriyle (collocations) birlikte öğrenmek gerekir.

Phrasal verb'ler

  • come up with = (fikir, plan, çözüm) bulmak, üretmek. Sık eşleşmeler: come up with an idea / a solution / a plan / an excuse. Örnek: She came up with a clever way to save time.
  • put off = ertelemek. Sık eşleşmeler: put off a decision / a meeting / a trip. Örnek: Don't put off your homework until the last minute. Dikkat: put off bazen vazgeçirmek, isteğini kaçırmak anlamına da gelir: The smell put me off my food.Kokudan yemek yemek istemedim.
  • call off = iptal etmek. Sık eşleşmeler: call off a match / a trip / a meeting / a wedding. Örnek: They called off the picnic because of the rain.

Deyimler

  • break the ice = tanışma anındaki gerginliği ve sessizliği kırmak. Örnek: A short game helped to break the ice at the workshop.
  • cut corners = işi daha ucuza ya da hızlı bitirmek için gerekli adımları atlamak (genelde olumsuz). Sık eşleşmeler: cut corners on safety / on quality / on costs. Örnek: The company cut corners on safety to save money.
  • be on the same page = aynı fikirde olmak, konuyu aynı şekilde anlamak. Örnek: Let's check that we're all on the same page before we start.

Bazı phrasal verb'lerde nesne fiil ile edatın arasına girebilir:

  • Doğrucall off the match

  • Doğrucall the match off

    nesne zamirse mutlaka arada olmalı

  • Yanlışcall off it

put off de aynı şekilde çalışır: put off the meeting / put the meeting off / put it off.

Sık yapılan hatalar

  • Edatı değiştirmek anlamı değiştirir ya da cümleyi yanlış yapar: come up with (bulmak) ≠ come across (rastlamak).
  • Deyimleri kelime kelime çevirme: break the ice buzu kırmak değil, ortamı yumuşatmaktır.
  • cut corners sadece olumsuz bağlamda kullanılır; iyi bir tasarruf için kullanma.
